” I Cannot stand the suffocation any more and have decided to join the Congress, which has a national and global vision. I now feel most comfortable.” These are the wordings of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s Bahu (daughter in law) as she decides to join Congress.
She told TOI (Times of India) on Friday, 28th November 2009 that “I have become a big admirer of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and want to be part of the good work being done by them for the country,”
The reasons for Smita’s decision are two. One, she feels the Shiv Sena is being unfair to Maharashtrians with its parochial and divisive politics and two, she was being systematically marginalised by powerful elements in the Thackeray household.
Smita said she was in touch with senior leaders of the Congress in New Delhi, and it was only a question of time before she formally stepped into the party. She is likely to call on Sonia Gandhi and Rahul in the capital soon. For the Congress it will be a prize catch, and indications are that Smita will be given an important post in the organisation.
Smita said that her father-in-law, who was earlier very supportive, himself failed to keep his promises to her. “I was promised a berth in the Rajya Sabha, but I was shocked when I learnt that my seat had been given to journalist Bharat Kumar Raut. In the assembly election too, I was promised a ticket, but it was denied to me for no apparent reason. One of my articles was published in the Sena mouthpiece, Saamna. But when I took the second article to Balasaheb, who is the editor, he refused to publish it. I got the message that I was not wanted any more, and tore up the article on the spot. It is painful to politically dissociate myself from the Sena, but I have no choice,” she said.
Smita, who is the estranged wife of Bal Thackeray’s son Jaidev, said she never considered the MNS an alternative since she did not agree with Raj Thackeray’s politics. “I am extremely proud to be a Maharashtrian,” she said. “I speak only in Marathi with my two sons at home. In fact the first film being produced by my son Rahul, who has trained in film-making in Toronto, is in Marathi. But I want Maharashtrians to change with the changing times. English is today a powerful tool of communication. Even the Chinese are realising this. I want Maharashtrians to be exposed to the literature of not only P L Deshpande, but also of Premchand and other great writers in other languages. I am against attacks on fellow Indians and the damaging of public property.”
Even though she lives in a spacious bungalow in Juhu, Smita retains her room in Matoshree, the Thackeray home in Bandra East. Since she is the first Thackeray to join the Congress, does she fear the consequences? “I have an identity of my own and am old enough to take decisions for myself. I do not fear anyone,” she answered firmly.

Liberhan Report Leak and indicts Atal, Advani for Babri demolition: Report

November 23, 2009

The Justice Manmohan Singh Liberhan Commission of Inquiry has indicted former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, current Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha L K Advani and former BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi, among others, for the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, calling it a meticulously planned event, according to a news daily.

The report says that as per the evidence it gathered, which includes witness statements and official records, one of the key conclusions of the Commission is said to be that the entire build-up to the demolition was well planned. Besides, there was nothing to show that these leaders were either unaware of what was going on or innocent of any wrongdoing.

The news daily also reported that sources in the Union Home Ministry have confirmed to the news and have revealed that the report is also severely critical of many Muslim leaders representing organizations such as the Babri Masjid Action Committee and the All India Babri Masjid Action Committee. The elite leaders of these Muslim organizations, the Commission says, constituted a class of their own and were neither responsible to nor were they caring for the welfare of those they claimed to represent.

The report was submitted on June 30 and is likely to be tabled in the current Parliament session.

Assam twin blasts claim 6, injure 54 Photo

November 22, 2009

Six people were on Sunday killed and 54 others injured, 34 of them seriously, in two back to back blasts suspected to have been triggered by ULFA, the second time in a week and five days ahead of the militant outfit’s raising day.

The bombs, which exploded near a police station here, were strapped to bicycles, Nalbari Police Superintendent Jitmol Doley said. They exploded within a few minutes of each other and about 50 metres apart, he said.

Cars and other vehicles parked in the area were damaged due to the blasts. Rumours of a third blast in the town were discounted by the police.

A high alert has been sounded and patrolling intensified across Assam after the attacks.

A senior police official said the ULFA was behind the explosions ahead of its ‘Martyrs’ Day’ on November 27 and there were reports of a group of nine militants belonging to the outfit’s 709 and 27 battalions entering the state to carry out subversive activities.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is in Delhi, condemned the blasts and condoled the death of the innocent people. “We will not tolerate the killing of innocent people. Security has been further heightened and a massive search operation launched to nab the killers,” he said.

However, self-styled commander of ULFA’s 709 Battalion, suspected to be behind the attacks, Hira Sarania told a local news channel that the outfit was in “no way involved in the bomb blasts and it was just a conspiracy by a certain section to derail the talk process”.

Central government-appointed interlocutor P C Haldhar was in Guwahati last week to hold discussions with state government officials ahead of possible talks with ULFA.
